I just removed my first valve spring!

Hi Rob,

Saw you made it, removing the valve spring!
indeed often the valve will not go out, because of partial wear, as you mentioned, and sometimes because of a little rim on the stem, caused bij the 2 retainers! With a stone I remove that rim. Removing valves always hurts the valve guide though!

Indeed, especially with BMW valves, things explode under my hands when I fit the springs.



The bushing is a rear fork bushing of an NSU MAX from 1957, that I owned.

I do not quite understand why you remove those valves though. You had an oil leak?

Those bores....one can drive until problems occur, oil burning etc. Maybe it is good enough.

Can change them later on.

Yes, WE are ALL wondering why he removed the heads and valve springs. It was NOT burning oil. see earlier posts. The oil was leaking out. Apparently the engine was running OK.
Well, there WAS a little rust on the valve parts on top, but had not caused any trouble.

THIS is why I am removing the valve springs from the working engine.
That is RUST (and quite a bit of it) on one exhaust valve spring and top cap.
I was told that rust on a spring can lead to bad things.



The springs on the crashed engine look to be in fine shape. They probably have less than 3000 miles on them.
Rebuilt by our own robtg just 5 years ago.

Actually, I thought you had oil leaking from the pushrod tubes down at the case end and had to pull the cyls to fix that.
Anyhow, not that they are all apart, how do (did) they actually LOOK?

Yes Jean, I originally had plans to replace the push rod tube seals.
I removed the valve covers and saw rust in the valve train, and all of this started.
I know I had adjusted the valves before I ran the engine for the first time, but apparently I missed it then.

I didn't post last night until late because I have been busy at work getting ready for today. The last day.
One of my co-workers turned me on to a link to a IT job at a hospital yesterday. It's a pretty extensive application.
And last night was the last time my best friend at work will get to work OT until 7pm while I am there, so we chatted it up until she had to leave.
Then the ex called in on the company phone from her place in PA. You see, my cell phone is pay-as-you-go, and I can't afford to burn up minutes for an hour at a time the way we do. So it is free for her to call me at work. Mostly we just talk about how old he dog is getting (slightly older every day) what she & my daughter had for dinner and whether or not she got a full day in at the factory (usually not).

It was a full evening and I didn't even get to watch the DVD I brought with me.
Out early a 11:30pm.

Tomorrow I fill out the online application for unemployment.
I may also go see the man at the bank about cashing in my profit sharing from this job and pay off my car so I can drop the full coverage insurance until I get gainfully employed again.
Don't worry, I'm keeping my 401K's.

Tonight is going to be crazy with all kinds of peoples hanging around after 9, waiting for Cycle to finish so they can begin switching over everything to the new company. I already have most everything cleaned out of my lockers.

I lost mine, this year.
On back ache. The physician says one can have symptoms. One can have bad intervertebral discs, herniae, scoliosis.
The defects, and the complaints neednt to be related. (but can, of course, W)
The same with bikes. One sees some faults. But they do no necessarily cause symptoms!

YES.

The top end rust (that we can see) would be most worrisome for me on the valve springs. I would NOT run an engine with rust pitted valve springs. A little surface rust on the rocker arm risers and the end of the rocker shafts is far less bothersome.

It's hard to tell from the pictures how deep the bore issues are, but that "bloom" certainly looks bad in the photos.

In fact I am an old guest.

The BMW (R65 1979) runs very nice, no engine/gearbox problems.

I have been busy with other bikes, the Honda 350 Twin K4 I got for free,and that I wanted to run properly (half way success, see Hondatwins.net) and the Suzuki Tempter 650, first bike of my son, bought with some issues, for example a welded oil drain plug!

This night I realised that " rim" is wrong. Should be " ridge?" Or is that specific for mountains?

The nice thing of this forum is that, through the BMW issues, shines a bit of American life (or Australian, or Norwegian, or..) to me.
