I will be replacing a drive seal this afternoon and need quick advice. What should I look for or watch out for when installing the seal. It's been several year since I worked on a drive, I was not able to find my shop manual for the R100/7.
I am planning:
1. Remove to old seal by poking a hole in the metal rim and driving a sheet metal screw in, using a small pry bar to lever the old seal out
2. To wrap the splines with a cut alumimun can before slipping the new seal in place to prevent cutting the new seal on the sharp edges of the splines
3. Tap the new seal in place working my way around with a brass drift.

Not much more to it than that Curt. I used electrical tap over the splines as a protector, but the can does it just as well.

Coat the seal with a film of grease first, it'll go in easier and seal better.

Re: Quick Advice needed Drive Seal Replacement
Seems like everyone knew this...what's a drive seal? Where is it on the bike? You mention splines and since the splines in the final drive don't go in/out like that, you must mean the transmission input shaft seal.

Be sure to check the location of the old seal before taking it out, no matter where it is located. apparently some are set-in a bit recessed, some are flush and who knows what.
When I did my rear main on the engine, I expected it to be set recessed...it was flush when I got to it...You might also check that the new seal matches the old one...and make allowances if it's a bit different.

I too am wondering which seal Curt is replacing.

Re: Quick Advice needed Drive Seal Replacement
Unless there is a very obvious leak from the outboard seal, you should also replace the inner seal.

Just remember, when prying out the old seal, protect the edge of the housing so that you don't mar up the edge of the bore.
