System case latch repair

Post by CVA-42 »

After fifteen years of riding oilheads with system cases, I have finally managed to break a latch. I got distracted and tried to push the handle down while the security mechanism was out and I busted it off. I'm talking about the dayglo orange part that deploys into the handle when you turn the key. Of course, that part does not seem to be available by itself. BMW does sell the locking mechanism for the multifunction box which should do the trick (13 716 076 654 337). There are seven rivets holding the multifunction box to the case itself and these have to be removed in order to get to the locking mechanism. BMW sells the rivet kit separately (13 716 023 194 70). So - - before I start drilling out rivets and ordering new parts - - has anyone had any experience ding this job?

not the end of the world, it will still work but not lock, right?
a right angle drill is handy here but not a must, do you know how to get the locks out? a small pik will do the trick!

I broke one of those on one of my cases about 7 years ago. I don't find it to be a problem.

Maybe it's not a problem. From a security standpoint, I don't really care if the bag "locks" or not. But not having that tab deploy into the handle after the key is turned could let the handle pop up on the road. That might let the bag itself pop off the bike. Anyway, the parts alone are nearly $100. A strap around the bag to hold the handle down would be a lot cheaper.

Maybe more of yours broke off than mine. There is no way I can pop my handle open.
