Annoyed--Roundel Adhesive Situation

Wait--something missing here:



For those of you not blessed to live in CA, you need to know that our fuel nozzles are uncircumcised. If you have an older car or moto, you need to perform the function of a Prince Albert and watch carefully for spillage. This one spilled just a tiny bit, as for whatever reason there was fuel dripping out of the foreskin (malfunctioning vapor recovery? previous user loaded it by trying to stuff his tank?). Anyway, as I wiped it up one of the roundels popped right off and I checked the other one and it, too, was loose. I took it off at the gas station rather than drop it on the road. The spongy adhesive backing DOES NOT stand up to fuel. So I'm left with this:





What should I do to reinstall? Is there another sort of spongy adhesive that will stand up to gasoline mit 10% ethanol?

I don't know the name of the product, but Ken at Holt BMW showed me the stuff he uses and it's almost like a double sided thick tape that he can bend around the circumfurance of the roundel. I guess you could shoot them an email and they'd tell you what it is. From what I could see it was the same stuff that was on mine when I took them off to have it painted.

I used 3M Weatherstip adhesive (black).
I have the heavy metal "motorsport" roundels and they have not moved in 6 years. Spilled gas down on one of them once.

3M also has a trim adhesive. It's probably close to the same formula as the weatherstriping adhesive. I think the trim adhesive is black where the weatherstriping stuff is a yellowish color.

If it's a red double sided tape, then it's also a 3M product. I have a roll and it's incredibly strong.

The product MS showed is good stuff but pricey. You can get it at NAPA or any good auto body/paint supply store. I use it for attaching replacment VW emblems onto my wheel covers...the OEM "glue" is no good.
Also, Plumbers GOOP is good, but clean both surfaces with alcohol (from the paint dept) before using it. It seems to stick forever.

The yellow stuff is what we used to good effect. We called it gorilla snot. The trick is to prepare it correctly and let it dry quite well before applying the badge. It will be completely dry and one would think that nothing would stick to it. Wrong, it grips very well.
