While it's not as cheap as the hall effect sensors, Motorrad Elektrik has a replacement "can," which is cheaper than the BMW replacement.

Just FYI, years ago I added a second sensor inside my bean can. Have never needed it (put 2 new ones in when I did it), but check every couple of years to make sure the "spare" is still working. I bought 10-12 of them from Newark at the time, about $12 each, I think. Have given them all away over the years. Thanks for all the replies but I need to put this redundant sensor idea on hold.

My anxieties are now focused on the two bits of cubical metal ( approx 1/32" on a side ) that my R100 showed me when I dropped the trans oil. This R100 has <50K miles on it. Gulp.

Gulp indeed! Years ago I "lost" third or fourth gear on my R100/7. I was able to find some illustrations on the web and from the pieces of metal I was able to deduce that I had a broken cluster gear. Perhaps you could look at the pics and make a guess as to where they came from. But either way, I wouldn't run the transmission until I pulled the rear cover off and looked around. Easier said than done, as you know. There are some good pictoral writeups on the web regarding transmission disassembly, repair, and assembly.

... I wouldn't run the transmission until I pulled the rear cover off and looked around. Easier said than done, as you know. There are some good pictoral writeups on the web regarding transmission disassembly, repair, and assembly.
