Duane, you were not being PC. I believe the term you should have used was, "advance-challenged ignition timing".

I could see the marks where the can had rotated, but I checked for "looseness" and it really wasn't. I have no idea why it retarded itself, but it did.

I hate points. Especially the ones that are located between red hot exhaust tubes. I didn't used to hate them, back when everything had them and I was pretty handy with my dwell meter, which I have never figured out how to use on the Airheads.

I really like maintenance free. Which is not a very airhead sort of thing. I have an Omega ignition on my R90 and it has been flawless, but I don't think they are available. I know Randy just went through this, so I should go find his thread, but I am too lazy. Whats the best magic ignition for a 79 R65.

I always set points not by dwell but by timing marks. When real close with static timing, then on goes the timing light. (you know all this Brad). If timing is off a bit then I'd retard or advance the point setting.

About ten days before Ken's rally, I thought what the hell, and just to try out the damn thing, I ordered and installed a Dyna III on the /7. I took my time on the install using electro grease on connnections and heat-shrinking where needed. Simple Simon type deal here. Install took a couple of hours. Timing the thing was a snap. Since then, including the trip to Ken's and back and then some, the bike hasn't skipped a beat. Don Roberts commented it probably starts like a Jap bike now. (Yes it does.) And even though the old bike has now lost a fair amount of its personality, I'll forego that for more ignition dependability and longevity. The bike feels much better at 70mph with throttle response than it has for some time. And it's consistent. Bosch blue coils help too along with tame Bings and everything else in proper working order.

Lastly, I do have the entire OEM points/condenser apparatus neatly tucked into the fairing for justincase.

Damn! Retarded timing is what I was going to say before I got distracted and lost my train of thought. At least I think I was going to say that, but the distraction made loose my train of thought. Uh, I'm repeating myself, aren't I? Still, I'm pretty sure retarded timing would have been ritht up there near the top of the list.

Nah! Not Twilight Zone. Being a moderator lets me edit my post unlimited times. The changes that are puzzling you are the result of excessive cleverness on my part. That means I was able to come up with a more clever post than I started out with. Simply, the last version I thought more clever than the first--and I had already punched the "submit" button.

What I should have done is to make a note that I had edited my post.

Just in case anybody is wondering, I have never modified any post other than one of my own. If a post were unsuitable, such as a gross violation of the rules of the forum, then I might delete it. My plan, should such a questionable issue ever come up would be to send a PM to the other moderators to get their take on the post first.
