bmw r75/5 pushrod seals

i heard that there's a tool to reset the pushrod seals back in to the block as long as the seals are not hard. What tool is needed and how would one go about doing this.

What you are actually doing is pushing the retaining ring along the pushrod tube, and the tool looks like this



That is a 3D model. I haven't actually done the job, and I think it is not possible with some models, where the retaining ring is welded on rather than being held by friction. Others may know more. The tool should be easy to make with a length of tube and an angle grinder. Good luck.

The ring was moveable until 1980, but 1981-on is brazed to the pushrod tube (according to Cycle Works)

The tool doesn't work if the rubber donuts are hard, at the ring will just bounce back. With the donuts from yesteryear, they were soft enough for the tool to work for a few years only. Then it was replace them and the tool was needed to "set" the rings as the job was finished. Each mechanic had this tool on his tool cart, as we might use them a few times a day.

The tool can be made from a short piece of 3/4" galvanized pipe with a hacksaw. Works a treat!







Squeeze the working end down so it's a good fit on the PR tube.
