I surmise the connection you "fixed" is INSIDE the canister with the red top?

Nah, it was the plug from the can that connects to another plug that comes out left and below the diode board. It's a fiddly job to put them together and the wire clip is designed to keep them together. I ended up removing the oil cooler and approached it from above as it was too restrictive trying it from front below only.

Mine joins under the starter cover, front left.
Glad you found it.

Way up there! To be accurate, mine comes out via the timing chest, lower and left of the diode board.

I'll put it back together again and go for a balmy evening ride tonight to make myself ( and y'all) clear that's it starting reproducibly!Image

Famous last words unfortunately Ian.

I tested it starting and it did start each time over 3 tests, and easily too.

Then I put it all back together and it wouldn't start.

I'm searching ebay for a cheap copy of "The Black Dog" right now!

In the morning, after a snooze, I'll open the front again and have another butchers.

There's a MG 1100 Sport on ebay that's making me think... .

Try again with the cover off Steve, if it starts you're onto something. Sounds like the wire is shorting or the connection is faulty.
If it starts with the cover off, poke and prod the wire and see if you can cause/pinpoint the failure.
Wish you were closer.
