Dellorto Stripped Thread

Post by Nourish »

The pilot jet thread has stripped in the the carb body on one of my PHM's, it doesn't look as thought there is enough metal to put an insert in it - any ideas - I can't afford to replace this carb. Cheers

JB weld, or some other epoxy type of repair? You can't weld it, so I don't know what else would work.

Alternatively, you could TIG weld a nut on the surface of the carb body.

I'm sure an insert could be made. The question is, is there enough wall thickness around the existing hole
that it could be bored out so the insert could be made with enough wall thickness that it could be pressed
pressed in without deforming it.

I would take a piece of brass or aluminum tube with an outside diameter slightly larger than the stripped threads and smaller on the inside. Tap the inside of the tube (off the carb). drill the carb body to the same size as the tube. Rough up the outside of the tube to give it some grip, apply a little JB Weld (to insert only) and push it into place. There should never be much torque on those threads, so it should hold just like new. If you were to tap the body for the insert I think you would remove too much material.

How exactly do you TIG weld a nut to a zinc alloy carb body?

Epoxy works well on carbs, just take a good cleaning to kill any oil, or gas from the parts

JB Weld has worked for me, with "problems" on old Bings.
Get some NEW, fresh tubes that have not been opened to be sure it's going to get really hard...and CLEAN the area where you want it to stick!! You'll also need to roughen the bore to provide adequate grip. Try acetone or alcohol (from a paint shop) for the cleaning.
