Timing chain on '86 R65

Post by raypond »

Do I need to remove the engine from the frame to replace the timing chain on my bike? My Clymer's manual says that I do but I think I trust the opinion of the blokes here more.

Cheers

G'day Ray. I didn't have to remove the engine to replace the timing chain on my R90, and Mr Clymer said that I should. I wrote a procedure thingy with pics at the time - I'll email it to you. There are some differences between the models but I think it may be useful.

Can't see why the engine would need to come out other than saving your neck some pain. Was just into mine to the chain and did not even take off the gas tank, starter cover or the crash bars. Taking those 3 things (4, I guess) off would've made it easier.

Taking the front wheel off makes it a LOT easier to do it in the frame!!
You have to arrange for some extra stabilizing at the rear, but it's worth the effort.
Get the bike at least 18-24 inches off the floor if you can.
