Rear engine oil galley plug...seal with what?

Bike is 83 RT gone naked....

On the engine there is a rear oil galley plug...(at about 7 o'clock..with socket head)


On this bike , the rear plug had been replaced with an oil pressure plumbing device allowing oil line to run to external oil pressure sending unit with oil pressure guage on the dash. I removed all that crap and got a plug to go there and plug the port...as is standard on other models.

My question is to seal this insert should I use RED Loctite...kinda thinking that way but just wondering. I did use some Yamabond gasket goop but it never really sealed it. I can thread the plug in quite a ways still stopped but then I think it would be blocking the oil galley line? On my other bike, this threaded plug is really tight, thinking that its been loctited with RED...think blue would break down in the heat.

So what do ya think I should use?

If I read it right, Snowbum says that this particular oil pressure galley has some high pressures in it. He does suggest red loctite here or possibly some of the Permatex permanent gasket sealers. The sealant just needs to be on the threads...how far do the threads go? I would think this is just the end of a galley...there's probably no cross-feed or through line here.

I looked at the 'bum's several articles on the oil distribution system and must have missed it...so thanks for the info.

Just hoping no leak with the RED Loctite as that will be a bitch to get out! Lotsa heat at that point

This plug can be screwed in quite a ways before bottoming out. On my 83 RS the plug is screwed in just proud of the engine case that's why I as wondering if there was a cross galley feed line there. Doesen't appear to be in 'bum's pic...


So looks like RED Loctite. With plug screwed all the way in...check for leaks...and if hopefully no leaky then...calling Jeff to Peening desk

First thing to do if using loctite will be to absolutely, thoroughly, painstakingly, clean the threads of both the plug and the block with loctite cleaner or similar. If not, all bets are off.

I've been looking at loctite 569 for my Ikon shock rebuild. It's for pipe threads in a hydraulic pressure situation.
Need to be careful in an engine situation though, as the temp range is up to 86c. If I'm correct.
Loctite red is suitable for higher temps but I'm not sure of its use in this application?
I'm not sure if peening is the way to go either. Peening will stop the plug from screwing out, but it won't prevent an oil weep.

Aw shucks....wanted to see the master peener in action

I have used the Permatex Hi-temp thread sealant product for hydraulic hose fittings before so think this would be a better way to go for now as I'm concerned about using Red Loctite as once plug is in there...it will be a bitch to remove if I do have a leak.

So threads are cleaned well as the plug is new and had a chance to clean the threads in the block as well. So, good suggestion to give it a go with this product. As I recall, I also used this product to seal an oil galley plug on the old Kubota after I accidently drilled a little to far for a larger tap of a f...d up the old gallet plug I had stripped.
