Battery

Post by Zombie Master »

1984 R100: Well it's time for a new battery. I've had a series of Yuasa Y60N24AL-B's that have served me well. After five years I automatically change them out.

Should I go to a new type this time? Maintenance free sounds good.

I want the new battery to bolt up with zero modifications like the OEM or Yuasa.

I see a listing for a YIX30LBS.

Thanx for sharing your experienced wisdom. :geek:

I have really liked my Odyssey. Have had it in since 2006, and still doing fine. I really like the maintenance free part of it- no leaks. I don't recall having to make any modifications, although it goes in sort of upside down, but is not an issue. My bike is a GS, I am not sure about fitment for others, but I sure will buy another one when this one finally goes. I have never had a battery that lasted this long. Lots of cranking power also.

I've used a couple of Westco 30amp AGMs in my R100 over the last 15 years, and won't be bothered with conventional batteries again. They wiggle in and out of the battery tray without any bolt loosening (I take them out for the winters here in Michigan), but they stay put without modifications to the box or hold-down hardware. I think some have theories that the AGMs are somehow unsuited to the OE charging capabilities of the bikes, but I've had no issues that I've become aware of. I hang a Deltran charger pigtail on the battery and use it when the bike is parked. No more vent tubes or messed up paint, chrome, etc. Replace at 8-year intervals. May cost you a blue ribbon, though, at the Pebble Beach Concours.

I use the Odyssey PC925L in 4 airheads (77RS, 77S, 75R90S, 94Mystic). I know it's bigger, heavier and more expensive than the 680 most people use but its dimensions are perfect.
On the older ones, the battery battery bolted in without issue. Slightly taller, but the holddown bracket attaches without a problem. The Mystic holds the battery differently. I could have used the battery post adapters, but a slight bend of the cable was all that was needed.
I keep them on tenders (Battery Tender Jr) and haven't had a problem with the batteries for years. The 77RS got its battery when I bought the bike in December 2005.

I have bought a couple of cheap value priced batteries from these guys: http://www.saskbattery.com/ and both have lasted very well. They sell this one, http://www.saskbattery.com/ecommerce_183.htm but I have no idea how that price compares.

That Deka looks good and is maintenance free, which would be great, but they says it may require hold down modifications. I recently purchased new battery power and ground cables. So I don't want to modify new HD parts, also I want to be able to use my tool tray as well, without any interference.

Mine uses the oem bracket to hold it in. No mods at all. The tool box thing fits in easy.

I bought this battery 3plus years ago and it's worked great. Fits in the stock /5 battery box (long wheel base), just a little wiggle to get past the sub-frame bolts. $43.00 delivered.

I second the motion on Westcos. Never have had any problems. Short or long wheelbase, the appropriate model drops right in although you may have to temporarily remove a subframe bolt. On the long wheelbase, you may need to turn the stock hold-down bracket over to clear the tool tray. That's it. If it arrives with the big ugly orange sticker on it, just peel it off.
