Not having a happy day in the shop. :| Guess I better get her up on the lift and see if a thread got burred. Sometimes the simplest things give the most grief!
Get a tap and run it through. A primary or secondary tap, not a bottoming tap because it is too easy to run off thread right from the start.
A primary tap will be the easiest to pick up the true thread if I'm not mistaken.

Don't screw with the bolt, if it's not too late.

How's that, better post?
So whats happening is: that the screw has made a new tread, it goes in a turn then it gets tight. All three screws thread into the other two holes without a hitch. The threads look good beyond the first few threads. I'm not familiar with primary and secondary taps, could you explain the difference? I have a tapered tip tap the same size and pitch as the bolt I'm nervous that I may cross thread with it. I have no room to use the tap handle. That aluminum is soft! I'm going to put the bike up on the lift so I can see what I'm doing. Maybe I should try and work back from the good thread with a 90 degree sharp metal pic, or dental tool.
Any and all disclaimers may apply

ok, must repair lead in to thread, probably how you suggest.
Putting a tap in with no idea where to start is no good.

Primary tap has the most taper.

Primary most.

Secondary less.

Bottoming least.

How do you degrade a thread on thread degradation?

We may be hanging by a degraded thread, but we'll probably thread the needle and avoid thread degradation thread degradation by needling thread degraders, who should probably go hang.
