Pet Peve for riding gear

In Garnets post about seeking a new jacket, I posted a link for the Areostich tansit jacket.

This seems to be the best gear for me and should have some serious added protection over textile. The water proof breathable, heat reflective leather is a first as far as I can tell. But there is one thing that turns me off with this and a lot of other gear:

VERTICAL ZIPPERS! While this might be a good Idea for taking a leak; it is a lousy idea for when it comes to losing stuff if you forget to zip up a zipper. You can see the picture of Neil Pert posing with his Transit Suit and both pockets are unzipped. I wear the older version of BMW City Jeans which have vertical pockets, and I lost my expensive electronic Key for my KTM. Who here has not left their zipper down? .....Let them cast the first stone.

I agree Neil, I carry lots of stuff including my keys in my deep cargo pockets. That (and the heart stopping price) has held me back from pulling the trigger on the Badlands Pro jacket.

Because my First Gear jacket has really deep pockets, I've managed to not lose anything out of them in spite of the fact that I've left them unzipped a number of times.

My old Belstaff clone has pockets like these, nothing falls out.

I lost a pair of prescription eyeglasses in a vertical zipper pocket while wearing my prescription sunglasses. It sure sucked trying to ride home in the dark.

So everyone at Boxerworks (5 of us anyway) all agree that old style top loading cargo pockets work the best. Yet when reading owners reviews of some jackets there are people out there that complain about top loaders, wishing they where side entry. Maybe they need to loose something valuable.


Whilst on the subject of cargo pockets, I too have a Belstaff clone (made in Aus), that I can carry a ton of stuff in the pockets, yet they don't seem to be that big. I've owned a couple of "adventure" jackets, and looked at many more, that claim to have "huge" pockets, yet I can barely fit my basic needs in them, let alone a tool kit, sandwich, apple, bag of nutters, and a few other things you may need when you are out on the road for a full day.

Vertical zippers notwithstanding, the Transit is one fine piece of kit. I had admired them since they first came out but the price was stopping me until a used but next-to-new one in my size came along last year at half price. More water-proof than my old Roadcrafter, cooler than traditional black leathers, well-armored, quality built, and many useful features.

Yes it is nice, but I wish it had some form of venting , which I know can lead to leaks, and was available in something other in RMOB (run me over black).

When I couldn't afford Carhart anymore, I switched to Dickys, which have vertical pockets and I hate them. I can't see any advantage to them.

Come on you blokes, at least the zips aren't on the bottom of the pocket.
