Good luck. I was one of the 25%. The Boyer also made my machine ping/knock. And I had to "re-manufacture" the unit in order to get it into the bean can. And the instructions looked like they were printed on a North Korean Gestetner copier.

So I bought a EuroMotoElectric unit. Much, much better in all respects. The biggest advantage was easier starting.

I am happy that bbelk had a successful outcome with his upgrade.
I was concerned about all the sanding this & sanding that & refitting the other thing and still wondering if he has something rubbing on a completed job after he spent his hard earned bucks for what should be a plug and play upgrade.
Personally, I haven't had time yet to gain any knowledge of these specific systems but I like the other respondents comment about the Euro Moto Electrics unit.

(At least they are right there in Colorado where he's going with his motorcycle in a truck (really?), so that if his new grind to fit system craps out he'll be able to take a quick trip over to EME & get something more correctly engineered).

What I find truly disturbing is that bbe.. wasn't able to learn how to correctly diagnose this very basic and dependable system and then replace only the faulty part instead of jacking up the whole machine and sliding a new system under it.

There's some satisfaction in learning and finding out exactly where the problem occurred & why. In my experience......issues like this often turn out to be caused by "installers error" rather than mechanical failure maybe as much as half the time. If that were the case (not sayin' it is) the user learns from that experience and may therefore keep from messing up something else later.
I see no reason why if all conditions are correct that you shouldn't be able to (properly) install a quality set of points and condenser in most any engine and expect years of trouble free service from that set.
Hopefully the new system will run trouble free for a lifetime of wonderful touring.

There are a lot of disturbed people around here. Some more than others.

What I find disturbing is that Bill Blake still sells these things. It is known that a certain percentage are faulty. It is also known that some creative fitment is needed to get them into the bean cans. And once that occurs, the buyer (as I found out) can't return the unit.

The Motorrad specialist (Dave from Anderwerks) I talked to in Calgary must've also run across similar issues. When I mentioned the name Boyer, he practically spit in disgust.

Bill Blake was upfront about the problems and said the modifications that may be needed to get the thing mounted would not stop him from taking it back and returning my money if there was a problem.

I have been a little foolish in that I did a 40 mile test run and then loaded the R65 in the truck. It has now traveled about 1,300 miles and hasn't been unloaded yet. We have used all four bicycles and the canoe several times, but we haven't stayed in one place long enough to unload everything. If I do have an infant failure on the Boyer, its gonna suck. But since good things happen to good people, I have faith that it will all work out.

Status report

I am eating pie and ice cream in Delta Colorado with another 100 miles on my new ignition. It seems to be working fine so as soon as I finish my coffee I am headed into the mountains. If you never hear from me again it's because I trust technology more than points.
