Undoing R80 exhaust pipe nuts ?

Barry just sent me the pdf for the one above , it's pretty useful 'cos without the nut off the bike it's hard to get the right dimensions .

I reckon I'll get the boys in town to gas out the basic shape then I'll drill it for the pins and weld them in .

Success !!! 6 days of heating twice a day with a MAP torch and copious applications of Penetrene then today a few taps with a rubber hammer onto a block of pine and the threads turned then spun off. The threads are in perfect condition ! Happy, Happy !

I never got around to buying the required spanner as I planned to try the heat and Penetrene for a week and I just made it !

Good job Sibbo. Keep 'Never Seize' on those threads and you'll never have that problem again. Your patience and perseverance saved a few bucks.

It should say, Never Seize until it does seize. That stuff is great, but is only good for a short time, a few years. I prefer to only tighten it up just enough to stop the leaking air. It the parts are all in good condition, this will be well below the stated torque. Another example of how too much torque is far worse than too little.

Yearly, one should back the nut off, clean the threads and re-goop it up with Never Seize again.

Stop messing around, get the wrench and at least one spare nut. Make sure that you assemble the two compression rings correctly, or it will probably leak.

If you notice that the nut on the right cylinder is coming off nicely, but the nut on the left cylinder is requiring a bit of work, stop immediately! Take a look at the radii of the two exhaust pipes. The left pipe begins to bend immediately as it leaves the cylinder head flange. The right pipe has a straight section before it begins to bend (so the nut can spin off without touching the pipe).

Then look at the manual. This is why is says to loosen all the nuts and bolts on the whole exhaust system before trying to detach the pipes or loosen the nuts.

How do I know this? Because I recently stripped the threads on my left cylinder exhaust flange.
