spark plugs coils etc.

Post by Oldcolt72 »

What is everyone doing / using for plugs, wires, resistor caps, and coils for the "newer" rides like my 91 R100?

Is the 5k total resistance in play here as it is for my 1979 bikes?

Can I use the old VW blue coils on this one?

Yes, I have been away for a while.

Same as for the post 80 EI bikes Doug.
Coils pre 80 were 3ohm, post 80 1.5 ohm electronic ignition coils.

The pre 80 used the 2 6v coils, the monolevers used the single twin coil. The important thing there was to ensure you don't have the crack-o-matic coil. I believe it was grey, replaced with a similar looking black "made in Slovenia" marked coil.

There is a thread at http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1001918 re: the ohms required and what you can get away with. The ICU comes into play a little as they were changed over the years and their requirements re: matching coils.

The latest version of the ICU has turquoise lettering and suits a 0.7ohm coil arrangement.

I run stock coil and plug wires on my monolever R100RS and NGK plugs (BP6ES). Very happy with NGK plugs! :D
I think all of the 80's airheads and later used the 5k ohm plug wires and if you wanted to step up to a premium wire you could go with these NGK's from Euro Motoelectrics: http://www.euromotoelectrics.com/Igniti ... -wsr18.htm They're at a terrific buy!
