Geezerhood Approaches-Lowr Pegs/Raise Bars RS
After 10 years off the bike and new knees, at 6'4" the riding position of the 1977 R100RS is proving cramped. I've seen bar risers discussed on the forum but are there approved peg-lowering parts or procedures such as Suburban Machine makes for the new bikes? Or do I head for the workshop?

Can't say as I've heard of peg-lowering kits for Airheads. As mentioned, there are kits for some of the later bikes.

Can't you move the pegs on their mounts on a 1977? My /6 has serrations where the pegs meet the frame.
Call me Mel. Some years ago- never mind how long precisely- having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me at home, I thought I would ride about a little and see the other parts of the world.

Here's a couple shots from my '84 RS....

If a guy were handy with a torch and welder, it could be done.

I'm tempted to put a woggle in the peg itself and drop outboard and below below the exhaust to get 40mm or so like the kits on the newer bikes. You'd have to extend the peg a little wider to keep full boot width but you'd still be way inside the fairing and heads. Maybe do it with a flip-up peg just in case. Have to diddle the brake and shifter too.
Not sure the rearset solution is going to get it. I need to straighten the knees out not just the hips.

I think that you need a different motorcycle to fit your new requirements. I only rode the café style, but the RS was always "too much" for me and I preferred the "S" models.
You might like the standard bike with a frame mounted touring type fairing.

Hi Duane,
I had a BMW car shop on the other side of the freeway from your bike shop in Marin. I bought this 77 from the dealer in Richmond and have had it since. Probably my last bike.
What did you find "too much" on the RS and not the S? All the plastic?

The easy thing to do is change the bars.
The mufflers may get in the way of lowering the pegs.
A taller seat, extra padding? Try something on the seat for extra height and see if it helps. Higher bars would be a must if that helped.

BMW built a solution to the fit problems of an airhead RS----the RT. A clean RT that's stripped of any J.C. Whitney farkle-I-zation it may have suffered under previous owners, is still a great travel tool for long days and/or lousy weather.

An Air Hawk seat cushion will boost your butt up at least a 1/2" or more.
