I agree with Ken, the cluch should not drag.
Something got mis-assembled. I have not had a post 81 clutch carrier apart myself, so I can't point you to any likley things to look for, but start with the throw out bearing assembly. Make sure that all the bitts are in there and in the right order. Do you have a Clymer or Haynes manual? Maybe find a good pic of the parts breakdown on the interweb.
On early /5s there where spacers between the rear friction plate and the flyweel. These are not used when replacing that plate with a new later plate. If you did there was problems. Is there any thing like that going on with the post 81 setup?
