Here’s a dilemma I hope the group can help me with. I have 3 BMWS an unfinished/2 conversion, R100 and R90. The 900 runs but is very rough, missing cosmetic parts. The stock 1000 is an 81 and missing the 17 digit vin plate but has correct factory vin # stamped into the neck it’s just missing the first 10 numerals on the title. The dmv refuses to issue a new vin plate and will not register or title the bike. Because of this problem I plan to use the snowflakes on the /2 to improve braking and also have the final drive conversion. What parts from the 81 (aside from the drivetrain) would fit on the R90/6?

Welcommen!
Many parts but from 9/80 on there are less.
Might be just as easy to ask "what doesn't fit?" Trans is the obvious thing. Instruments are different and so is the loom and the switches. he front end inc brakes is different but the whole thing should bolt straight on I think.
Plenty of other stuff too. www.realoem.com is a place where you can look up parts on the fiche and compare the numbers.

Most things can be made to go togegther with a variable amount of collateral work. For example, the gearbox will fit but only if you change the clutch and flywheel on the engine. The front end will bolt up but you;ll have to accept the later mudguard and other bits ubless you want to go into part modification. You'll also probably need to use the later master cylinder. My suggestion would be to work out what bits you want to change over and ask for specific information...

Why is it missing the vin plate?? Maybe you can get a blank one and stamp your info into it? As long as you don't alter anything on the plate, should be legal to change it.
Otherwise, there must be a way, probably with the proper form in hand, to go to the police and have them verify the bike is not stolen and is legit. In Ca., the highway patrol does this. They are also the ones that verify corrections made when you get a fix it ticket.
Another thought is to go to one of these DMV registration services. They should know the loop holes to get things registered where DMV office won't take the time or know how to do it.

I live in Nevada, the title was from California. Getting someone from the California DMV on the phone to answer my questions was time consuming. I was instructed to ask the highway patrol for an inspection and a new vin plate. The CHP stated they need an order from the DMV before they will even look at it. I am a hour and a half away from the nearest California DMV. I have considered ordering a vin plate from eBay, that would probably work but what about the next potential owner? I do not want to screw him by not being honest nor accept less for the machine. I would rather use the R90 parts on the /2 because it’s in such poor condition but having better brakes and drivetrain from the R100 on the /2 is preferred

I had tabs welded onto the front swing-arm of my conversion rig. I used a snowflake for the disc. I bought a used R65 wheel and brake parts because that was what I was most familiar with. It looked ugly, but worked great.
I'd recommend a wire wheel for aesthetics.
Certainly improved braking, but this was all before I discovered this forum and found out that BMWs drum brakes were not that bad. I was just woefully ignorant on maintenance and adjustment. For instance, making sure that the hole in the brake (AND CLUTCH!) levers where the cable terminates is lubed with grease so that the terminator can freely rotate during use. I'm not sure if this critical bit of info is included in their otherwise comprehensive owners manual.
