Hunting trip

Post by ME 109 »

A good days hunting was had yesterday with another bag of sportsbikes taken.
430 kilometres with three excellent sections of mountain roads including Falls Creek, Blue Duck to Omeo and Mount Hotham.
The old RS is almost unassailable in the super twisties where second and third gear are most commonly used.
I find the RS to be incredibly nimble in these tight riding situations.
The front end with a Lasertec is brilliant. It just doesn't let go.
The back end with a first time tried Pirelli sport demon isn't quite as good as the mac 50 but seeing they don't make my mac 50 anymore there aint much choice.
I'll try an Avon am26 rear next.

My new front master cylinder has started to leak past the rubbers on the piston. It's only 6 months old!!
I wonder if Motobins gives warranty on parts?

The mountains are beautiful this year with wildflowers everywhere and the rivers and streams are running better than I've seen for many years.
The damage from bushfires over the last ten years is still quite obvious but recovery is slowly happening.

Man I love my 'ol RS.

Ah, the carpark at Falls Creek and a bunch embarrassed riders of shiny things. Keep up the good work, Jeff and ol' RS. What's the road from Falls to Blue Duck like now - remembering that two years ago it was thick drifts of fine gravel on freshly laid tar.

What a circuit! I bet that was fun.

I went up Hotham in early December and the road was clean, clear and bereft of cars. We passed just one as it descended. There was a helicopter parked on the side of the road about 3/4's of the way up though.

The new bits on the Jamieson/Eildon road were a little swarthy, but not like the Falls/BD road.

The Falls Creek to Blue Duck section is far better than 2 years ago however there were a few spots of arse puckering gravel on bitumen.
It is typically 80-90 k most of the way on that section.
I find that section of road is not to be trusted as the light colour and texture of the road surface hides the gravel quite well.
All the other sections of road were game on.

The Blue duck to Omeo road remains my favourite piece of road.
It has the most hair pin bends per kilometre I know of.
It is full on riding without really exceeding the 100 kph limit.

The helicopter on Mt Hotham could have been cutting down trees. No, really. Have a look at this: http://www.bordermail.com.au/news/local ... 28303.aspx I rode over Hotham in the week before Xmas and, sure enough, there were lots of trees with the tops cut off.

I agree about the Omeo/Blue Duck road - it is excellent. But watch out for: a) Farm boys in utes, b) police (the bartender from the Blue Duck got booked on that road for not wearing a seatbelt) and c) arseholes on their shiny go-faster bikes. About a year ago I helped pull a bloke's Kawasaki out of a farm fence on that road. In fact here's the very corner: http://maps.google.com.au/maps?ie=UTF8& ... 96,,0,9.59

He had come around that gentle corner very, very fast, went between the white roadside post and the gate post and ended up in the fence near the white fencepost. He and his mate had trailered their shiny bikes down from the flatlands of central NSW to spend a few days hooning around the mountains. The bike was a write-off and he had a broken collar bone. He wasn't at all concerned about either as he had apparently written off another bike 9 months earlier. I guess he was used to it. But he was either very tough or very stupid. He insisted on staying with the bike while his mate rode back to pick up the car and trailer they had left in Myrtleford. This is at least a five hour return trip. It was a stinking hot 40º day and would be near dark before his mate got back but this bloke was quite happy just to sit there. No hat, bone almost poking through the skin, no water (he grudgingly accepted my water bottle eventually) and no phone reception. We offered to take him to Omeo so he could wait in a cafe or a pub but he wouldn't hear of it. And he certainly didn't want an ambulance or the Police involved. I watched the papers for the next few days and no dead people turned up so I guess he lived to ride like an idiot again.

Many riders come to grief in the Hotham-Omeo-Blue Duck area.
About five years ago on a trip over to the coast via Omeo, we lost one of our group to a collision with a car towing a caravan.
No excessive speed by rider or car, but enough to take his life.
I had arrived at Omeo with the deceased riders brother, a long time riding friend, only to wonder why the rest of the group were delayed...

Our group controlled the accident scene for about an hour until the police arrived from Bairnsdale, as the local copper was away.
We all stayed in Omeo that night as it was too late to head home after the accident had been dealt with appropriately.
Everyone did what they had to do.

On December 4 last year a group of 16 including six kids were heading over to Blue Duck for the night.
At Omeo we got the news that one of our group had dropped his GS 1200 due to a disgraceful road repair, which almost all the group had trouble with.

It was the same bend.
