81 RS instrument housing

Post by ME 109 »

Trying to find a new instrument housing (speedo, tacho and idiot lights) for my 81 RS
I've looked at the Motobins site but can't see one.

Any ideas as to where I can buy a new housing?

A good second hand unit would be ok. But they don't appear too often on ebay....

I didn't see the housing either, but I'm sure the one on the website is housing only, not including instruments.

The R80 cluster will not have the correct speedometer for your rear-end.

Howdy Jeff.

Are you just after the instrument housing, or the whole lot, inclusive of the speedo & tacho?
That R80 housing will fit, but the bottom idiot light will be labelled "brake failure" instead of "high beam"...I think.

The high beam indicator on that one is at 6 o'clock in the tacho.

Ask the seller what condition the internal female screw holes are in. They get brittle and crack badly. Better still, ask for a high res picture.

The speedo will always sell on easy enough, but the tacho is harder to move.

Thanks gents, just the housing is needed.
That R80 pod is wrong as you say Steve, I should have looked closer.
My instrument housing has taken a pounding over the years from corrugated roads.

Jeff, if you're prepared to buy from the UK the best outfit to ask about a second hand unit is Motorworks - www.motorworks.co.uk

They list them as a used part (depending on availability) for $83 AUD.

Thanks Daniel, Steve has emailed me with one that is on overseas ebay. If that one is unsuccessful, I'll email Motorworks.

FWIW, it all depends on the age of the R80. early ones will havge the 'Brake Failure' lamp but one from a '81 R80 will be identical to that from a '81 RS. |The equipment fitted to various models tended to differ with age rather than model sexignation. If memory serves, every model from 1980 on (excluding 'GS, R45/65 to '84... theres always exceptions) has the same instrument housing

Rob

Oh, the R100R and Mystic are also different I think!

Rob, it's a late '70's R80 instrument set. The circuit board would also be different, but Jeff only wants the cover.
