Spline wear question ...

Could you experts please have a look at the pictures and tell me if that looks like 60% worn splines on the final drive and 40% wear on the wheel splines

I don't like the looks of it and intend to ride the motorcycle for a while. If I have not got more than 10,000mls remaining should I consider it preventive maintenance and do it now?

The seals of the final drive are gone as well, so it that a case for Hansen's in Oregon (do they do final drive refurbs as well)? I like their idea of reducing tolerances and running tighter fit. Who else in the US of A is currently active in this kind of work (and does it himself)?

Thanks in advance, Stephen

I'm no expert Stephen, but I have a final drive and wheel that are down to needles (<) so I'd say you have many more miles left. I'm sure that the more worn they get, the faster they will wear. You could do the final drive seal yourself, don't want a slippery rear brake.

Good for a season but no more. At least that's how I'd treat them. I haven't heard of anyone with a better rep than Hansen's but I've not used them myself. Shame on BMW for this design!

I can't tell. I think we need a bigger picture.

 When I zoom in, I think I can see some pitting on the molecular level: Image

The wheel splines are just fine and good for a long time. The final drive splines are over half worn and will run a long time too, but should be fixed soon. That grease should not be there, so where did if come from?

The brake lining is still good.

We used Hansen, but that was 40 years ago, so I have no idea if the quality is still good.

I'd like to see them cleaned of grease.

The work was done by Scriminger developments in the UK. I should really get the wheel spline done as well, that can wait until next winter.
