Gidday Fellas
As a guide on the dipstick, does anyone now how much 1/2" drop on the stick be in ml's
Reason being on Saturday when I left for the rally oil was 5mm down from the top line and on return Sunday arvo its 5mm above the lower mark with distance travelled 1500kms and speeds were fun over that distance
81 RS 145,000kms with no major motor work done that I know of and I have history from PO's and theres nothing about being cracked open...
Rides, pulls and goes well and I have never noticed oil comsumption a major issue before this trip, is this something to be a little worried about?? and is this normal useage??

Re: Oil comsumptionish
Min to max indictator on the dipstick is 1l. Max allowabel consumption is up to 3/4l per 1000km as per BMW recommendation. My personal limit is at 1/2l per 1000km. For iron lined barrels, this is a good time to check barrel ovality and taper and see if new rings will do the trick. At 150,000km most likely not! If it is your 81 RS you're talking about then you already have Nikasil coating and only need to re-ring ... most likely. No major work necessary.
Some of the above is fact, some is fiction, some is my personal imagination and some is just simple truth. [me]

I would suggest that 1/2 litre (ish) over 1500 kms enthusiaistic riding with an engine that is pretty worn isn't anything to get too worried about. You may want to monitor consumption over a few thousand kilometers to see if you are getting a consistent loss but, to me, unless it was getting worse or there were other issues with running perhaps or smoking, I wouldn't start any major surgery. At 145,000 kms, it's going to need some work eventually but it'll probably go for another 50,000 kms before it's a necessity.

You didn't mention checking for leaks...could some be getting out while you are riding?

145,000kms ....hmmm...
With fresh oil, if you rev the piss out of it in neutral do you see smoke from the exhausts?
If so,
Rings for sure.
Exhaust valve guides for sure.
No smoke at all? No external leaks?
just keep running it as is and top up the oil when necessary.

Gidda fellas,
Great info and thanks for the replies and to answer some questions,
No oil leaks at all...
SteveD did say that the right side pipe was sometimes blowing out white smoke when we were giving it a bit...
To be honest in the four years that I have had her and regarding the engine I have just changed the oil and filter every 3000kms and new plugs...I've never had her opened up and still haven't had a go at the carbies, sorry bout that GSPD...
Riding side by side SteveD bike over the weekend and fueling up together over the 1500kms there would a 1 litre difference in consumption sometimes with SteveD using that little bit more, but his bike does have those nice sounding pipes on and yes I had a ride of his for about 30kms, 2nd only RS I have ridden ever and to me it is a little more responsive, the throttle seemed lighter, more like a dirtbike compared to mine....Nice bike Steve...
