1975 r/6 bike fell over broke a few things

Post by mefrank11 »

Someone didn,t put there bike on the sidestand correctly and it fell over hard.. He broke the headlight lens right turn signal lens . I replaced the lens had to tweek the chrome rim ever so little to get it on . Replaced the turn lens all seems good . Now i have a couple of issues the rear brake light switch in on all the time, I pulled the wire off of the switch, front switch is working properly. The low beam on the head light out. I put a new h4 still no low beam. I,m thinking the shock did some damage . I,m going out to the garage right now and try to figure this out I,ll be checking for help Thanks Frank in Florida Ok I found the low beam wire off inside the bucket it was a loose fit probably being on and off with fearing. All good now with the exception of the rear brake light switch.
later the same day found the switch good. Its looks like the pivot for the brake lever is worn allowing the two contacting pieces to miss . Now I,d could use some input on how to deal wit h this Thanks Frank

its looks like the

Can you bend the bracket that holds the brake-light switch and get it lined-up with the lever?
OR (This is really the best thing to do)
Remove the foot lever and install a bushing in the hole in the lever. I'm not talking about any sophisticated machine-shop job, here. I think a bit of brass tubing or EMT (thin-wall conduit) or something like that will do the job. It's not exactly a high-speed rotation you are dealing with. You may have to drill-out the hole in the lever to accomodate the new piece though.

Take the brake pedal off and check for wear. Most likely the bolt and bush are worn.
Getting the bush replaced is easy enough. Most bearing suppliers will sell bushes.
Replacing the bolt may be a little more difficult as it is not a 'normal' bolt.
BMW may be the best place to source the bolt.........maybe the bush as well.

No point bending anything as it is not solving the cause of the problem.

AFAIK, all /6 machines have a bush for the rear brake lever. It may be seized in the frame bracket but it should be there. The bush should be slightly longer than the frame bracket so that it bolts up solid to the lever. The bush moves in the frame braket, not the bolt in the bush. The bolt should have a grease nipple (Zerk fitting?) in the hex end so you can grease the bush.

A number of years ago my /7's rear brake pedal had a similar bit of slop in it. With not having a dealer or www handy at the time, I fashioned the unusually sized washer out of a coffee can plastic lid. Maybe I made two to take up the slack a bit better. It now allowed proper contact with the brake switch.
Years later, it still works fine.
