59 R68 electrical issue

Post by Lpalfa »

Hello
This is my first posting to this forum however I have been an active reader for the last year. I purchased a 1976 r 60/6 last year which I restored and it is my daily ride. My question is about an r68 that I just purchased and would like to restore as original as possible. The bike was converted to 12 volts years ago and I want to go back to 6 volts. My question s today are these.

1. This bike is a battery and external coil system but some of the literature I've read shows the generator/ dynamo system. Which is right for this bike?
2. Would they have kept the same generator and put a 12 volt regulator to control the power?

3. Aside from all the standard stuff like lights, battery, regulator, horn, coil , what else would they have needed to change for the conversion?

Any help would be appreciated.

Sorry on my previous post, it's an r26, not a 68. Not sure where I got that!

The R25 and R26 used the same 6V generator with the ignition coil mounted on it. The voltage reg is mounted across from it under the front cover.

It requires a battery to operate, unless you can push it fast enough for the voltage reg points to close, which is around 2000 rpms. I have seen a couple of pics of 12V conversions using a /5 alternator and a Peugeot alternator. Also there is the Power Dynamo http://www.powerdynamo.biz/eng/systems/ ... 83main.htm system which is a modern magneto and permenant magnet alternator combined. I have used the Power Dynamo for about 6 years and it works perfectly.

Do you have any ideas where I can get the parts. Used will be fine. I'm in Vancouver Canada so there were some local shops but no luck so far.

Thanks again

For new original parts try Bench Mark Works http://www.benchmarkworks.com/ Depending on the exchange rate, Mark Huggetts shop is another good source http://www.bmwbike.com/index.php?l=en and there is always Hucky's Spare Parts: http://www.bmwhucky.com/ Lastly, for used parts try the IBMWR Marketplace, you can post parts wanted ads there too: http://marketplace.ibmwr.org/
