Hi fellows, I'm in the process of stripping my /7 and have found the horn mounting brackets broken on both sides of the frame. They look like a vibration related stress fracture.

Has anyone else seen similar damage on their frames?

I'll make new tags a little stronger and weld them in place when I strip and blast the frame, i'm just interested to know if it is normal damage, that is all.

Gidday Sam, I can't remember the fine print, but there's method in the madness with the horn brackets.
Two thin strips isn't it?
It helps with the sound of the horn apparently.
Going to a thicker strip (like 3mm) will affect sound.

Similar experience with the horn brackets on my '82 R100 some years ago. I fabricated new ones from thicker stock. Don't remember if there was a change in the sound of the horns or not.

I just removed a horn from a 1974 R90/6 yesterday in preparation for shipping it out. Yes, it had two thin springy strips of metal for vibration.

Guess it will go on eBay along with all the rest.

Definitely normal. Unfortunately too.
After about 10,000 miles of a complete restoration of my R100S, one of the horn brackets broke.

I didn't like the wimpy horn on my 82 R100 so I installed a Nautilus horn. When a horn is needed its just the ticket - it really gets their attention.

I used a piece of 1/8" x 1" x 6" strap metal, drilled it, painted it black and mounted as shown below.

OP - are you talking about two brackets on the outside of each leg of the main frame?
I remember seeing those in ads and in the showroom before I bought my R65. I was really disappointed in the single disk-type horn.

So I fixed it.

Anyway, those side horn mounts may be similar to the coil mounts on the early R65 - that being a 'U' shaped bracket welded to the main frame. On the R65 the coils were mounted to them, along with the main ground on the front coil. When the coil mount eventually broke (those that got ridden broke) it removed the ground connector from the circuit!

Anyway, that is what I think the OP is talking about. In which case, you will need to fab some new brackets and weld them to the frame - or do something entirely different...

Got my twin Fiamms at Auto Zone. Mounted 'em up on the '81 R65 just like 'oneoftheRobguys' using two thin straps for each horn. The Major is correct about dualies...

Them muthas are loud. Best function is with a horn relay added to the wiring harness.
