For what its worth

I rented a F800GT BMW last week in San Fran. My lady and I rode 1200 miles to Grant Pass Or and back. The bike was extremely comfortable and capable. Plenty of storage for all our stuff, the lady loved the seat and the view it afforded her. We ride an LT on most trips so that is saying a lot. Light weight, plenty of power, comfort, good storage, 63 mpg at 70-80 mph. I would say BMW hit the mark with this one.

My local mechanic has a courtesy F800ST that customers can use. It's a fun ride.

I have a friend that has hired one and he says it's probably the best bike he's ever ridden. Not the fastest, not the best handling but the best packaged bike he's ridden. Now he hasn't ridden lots and lots of bikes but he has been riding 30+ years and does have some idea about what's important. High praise and seemingly well deserved.

ZM had a version of one in Europe and from memory he liked it too.

Great bike. I should have bought one. Practical, cheap to operate. 90 hp. What more could you ask for?

Not at the gas pump, the f800r used very little fuel.

The 800 may be my next bike. The sad thing is that I have a hard two bike limit and the 800 would do everything better than either the R65 or the R90, so if I take the plunge, I will probably be selling my airheads. I am very fond of them, but I doubt I would choose one of them when I wanted to ride. They work well together as the R90 has shield and bags and is used for road trips. The R65 is shorter and has lower gears and is more fun in town. Plus, it fits in the back of my truck between the 4 bicycles and under the canoe. This last quality is a make or break issue for the 800 and I have not taken any dimensions on it.
