Crap! I was connecting the clock wire and there was a spark, and the harness started to smoke. My bad. The wires are melted. Ignition lights come on when I turn the key on but the headlight stays on for a minute after the switch is turned off. I disconnected the battery.
I'll take it all apart and see how far the damage goes. At the very least I'll need a harness that hooks up the fairing instruments. Anyone know how where I can get this harness? It's difficult for me to tell what's bundled together at this point.
Any advice would be appreciated. Wiring is not something I excel at. I'm really pissed at myself for being a knob. Just wasn't paying attention as I should have, didn't have my readers on. Inexcusable.

Doesn't look too bad on the surface, but the way these wires are wrapped there may be some adjacent wire damage. The wire to the clock must have gotten red hot in a second due to my new powerful new battery. Now if I can just figure out what harness I need to order. I pulled off the connector from the burnt wire at the marked #31 position on the connection board. The connector wasn't burnt but the insulation was gone.
Bugger! That'd be annoying! I'm thinking you may need to pull the small harness out and check. The RS, at least mine, has the 10 & 11, two small harness's to the clock and vm. Seeing as the bike is a "S" from 84 then who knows how the wiring was done?
As suggested, can you pull the existing harness (that looks like #12 in the fiche) and check it over for burn damage and continuity of each wire in the harness.
#12 harness in the fiche looks exactly like what I had on my 77 S....I had replaced most of the wiring harness on that bike after an angry mouse/rat chewed through most of the main harness and elsewhere. Was lucky to have picked up replacement from IBMWR.org a few years ago. Maybe check with Motobins ? Or German eBay.
