Dellorto R90 Carbs with frozen slides

Post by jjwithers »

I got a /2 conversion with what looks like a R75 block and perhaps R90 pistons and cylinders in it. The cylinders are black on the outside but I have not yet measured the piston and cylinders because one side is frozen. More on that later...

The bike had sat outside for about a decade. Engine froze (gas dripped into one cylinder and created a science experiment).

Along with it are the Dellorto phm38 carbs that were used on the R90S. there is a nasty amount of old gas corrosion in the floats. I want to tear them apart to see if they are any good but it seems that the slides are frozen into the carb bodies. I let them sit for a few days with PB Blaster sprayed in them and nothing has come close to breaking free.
If they were Bings, i'd peel off what I could and toss them.
Since they are Dellortos, I want to salvage them and use them, if possible.
Any ideas how to break them free without damage?

I've have use Marvel Mystery Oil in cylinders to break them free. Maybe filling them with the stuff and applying heat from a hair dryer or heat gun will coax things along.

50/50 mix of ATF and acetone or lacquer thinner.
Better than anything you can buy.

When I was cleaning the fuel lines on my truck which sat for about 7 years before I got it, I used carburetor/choke cleaner that comes in an aerosol can to clean out the solidified fuel. You might try filling the carb with that and letting it sit, it will dissolve the varnish left over from the evaporated fuel.
I used the Marvel Mystery oil to free up the cylinders in the motor.

I read this thread and went out and mixed this brew up if ATF and Acetone today for the stuck slides in my Bings on the '73 R75/5. It worked like a champ. Bike had been sitting over 8 years and today was the first day to get after it.

Now you need to put one of these together to clean the outside of the carb bodies.

They are cheap to make and will clean up your cases as well.

You can purchase one of those huge Ultrasonic cleaners really cheap over your way that will/should fit the whole carby in it and any other parts that you need doing. These types of cleaners do an amazing job on cleaning dirty ammo brass.

Fwiw I believe I have the Dellorto tech paper for those if you'd like a copy. It may be online already, I've never looked.
