R1150RT transmissions

Post by jagarra »

I have been watching Craigslist and e-bay for sometime looking at this model of bike as possible addition. Seems I have heard various comments about the transmissions, primarily the 5 speed vs the 6 speed. Seems there were many negative comments about the durability of the 6 speed. Can any of you provide any insight on what you have experienced.
Right now I am looking at a 99 with a 5 speed and a 02 with a 6 speed, approximately the same mileage of 31K.

My 2001 GS is at 123,000 with no problems. I bought it new & use a high quality synthetic gear oil that I change at 10,000.

For what it's worth, and many here are much sharper than myself, the 02's are known for trans misalignments, in some cases - I've an 02 R1150 RT than has been a grand ride, with a few modifications - currently 89,000 miles, 55,000 by yours truly and, knock on wood, no tranny problems

2004 RT, 90k miles. zero issues with the tranny, splines, clutch, etc. Still shifts like a brand new bike. I've run Amsoil synthetic since new so maybe that's helped.

LOVE 6th gear on the highway, btw.
