Differential specifications

Post by PipeyD »

I have a 1972 r60/5 differential taken apart and cleaned up. I have measured the backlash but can't find any tolerances. Is there a correct method to measure? What about that shim thing. I measured the gap and the shim i have is too big. I know I can get a different size but certainly not the entire gap. Whats that axial play?
Thanks

You really need a workshop manual to do this. The backlash spec is 0.006" - 0.008" at the edge of the crown wheel adjusted by the thickness of the crownwheel thrust ring.

Thanks for the backlash figures. I was guessing .001 was not enough. The commpression ring will need to be replaced. The rings thickness is 2.29 mm so I would guess that the 2.3 thickness will work or atleast give me more backlash. I'll bet there is a formula you could calculate the the proper thickness of that ring. No time to find that out.
Now for the axial play... starting with the the shim i have, .63 mm. The gap that it fits in is currently .5mm. I thought about using the extra gasket that was in the package.
So the current gap is .5 mm. When i replace the compreesion ring. That should decrease the gap to .49 mm . If i add the second gasket i will increase the bearing gap to , .49 + .32 for the gasket. So i get .81 mm. Throw a .63 mm shim in there. Difference of .18 mm.
Anything under .1 mm Im more comfortable with thousandths. That gives me .007 in of axial play. I think i want to see more play than that AND im using two paper gaskets. Don't like the idea .
