Re: R100t first gear jump
Roger, If you’re not ready for a transmission rebuild for whatever reason, change the transmission oil (when hot) and see what comes out. If no chunks fall out and there’s no crap on the magnetic drain plug you can probably get many thousands of miles of riding out of it if you ‘adjust’ your riding ...

Re: R100t first gear jump
If it was a driveshaft/clutch/spline issue, it would also do it in second gear when similar torque is applied. You have an internal transmission issue. (99.999% probability) I've fixed this problem more than once on customer bikes. Coincidentally they were all very high mileage bikes. It’s impossibl...

Re: Contact breaker backplate seized and some general ignition system questions
Firstly following first setting the static timing, the advanced timing (F mark) was absolutely miles off even with the back plate rotated for maximum retard. After backing everything off, moving the backing plate to maximum advance, resetting the points gap slightly narrower than the baggy 0.4mm I ...

long rant
The rockers should have no perceptible vertical play at all. You can toss the feeler gauges for this job. Providing all your adjuster threads are in good condition, screw the adjuster(s) in all the way to get maximum valve clearance. If the rocker moves freely in and out while you squeeze the blocks...

Re: Contact breaker backplate seized and some general ignition system questions
You sound like you're headed in the right direction in the points plate department. Should there be any sort of lubricant behind the backplate? A cleanup and a squirt of WD-40 should do. It only seized up because the (crapped out) seal around it let water in. W R 5DC are resistor plugs. They shouldn...

Re: Pushrod towers leaking
I guess I'll do a refresh on the top end this winter. In the mean time... Roll a piece of paper towel into a 4 inch long by 3/4 inch diameter 'cigar' and tightly pack it in (from underneath) between the main frame and the engine case, just below the pushrods seals. This costs nothing and can easily...

Re: Pushrod towers leaking
Pushrod seals never leak onto boots, they just let oil trickle down to the bottom of the engine. Are you sure that's where your leak is? Valve cover and head gaskets often do leak onto boots. Sometimes the actual tube pressed into the cylinder can leak, good time to replace with stainless. There's a...

Re: R75/5 blowing fuses when starting
When my son installed the motor he built in his Z28 Camaro and tried to start it, we saw smoke coming off a small ground strap that was part of the ignition system. In doing his mods he had lost the original ground path through a much larger ground strap. Once he had a 0 gauge ground connection, it...

Re: R75/5 blowing fuses when starting
In over five decades of doing this I can't recall ever encountering a situation where a bad ground alone was blowing fuses.

Re: Woo Hoo! A Big Project!
One forgets just how sweet a 750 Airhead runs. All the way home: Not sure exactly what it is about these damned relics, but 'sweet' sounds just right. Not sure if it's just me. but I often feel like I'm piloting a Fokker triplane without wings. Sweeet. The longer shocks mean both wheels are on the ...
